Ukrainian Investigators Identified Five Russian Soldiers who Killed 17 Civilians in Bucha
Ukrainian authorities have announced charges against five Russian servicemen accused of killing 17 civilians in Bucha, Kyiv region, during the city’s occupation in 2022. The killings occurred in the area of Ivan Franko, Maksym Rydzanich, and Naberezhnaya streets.
Police investigators conducted extensive forensic work to establish the circumstances of the crimes, including hundreds of on-site inspections, witness and victim interrogations, forensic medical examinations, and investigative experiments. During exhumations, investigators recovered bullets matching weapons used by servicemen of the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment of the 76th Division of the Russian Armed Forces.
Using eyewitness testimony, ballistics analysis, and photographic and video evidence, police reconstructed the events and identified the specific perpetrators. The accused servicemen from the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment include a platoon commander, two senior sergeants, a junior sergeant, a senior soldier, and a gunner-operator.
All five have been charged with violating the laws and customs of war related to the intentional killing of civilians under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. If convicted, they face life imprisonment.
According to the National Police Agency, some case materials have already been submitted to the court, while the remainder is in the final stage of investigation. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators from the Main Investigation Department of the Police under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor General’s Office, with assistance from the Main Intelligence Directorate.
