Visit of Ukrainian Minister of Justice German Galushchenko to the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights
November 4 marks the 75th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights, a document that became the basis for the modern European system of protection of human rights and freedoms and led to the creation of the European Court of Human Rights.
For decades, the Court has remained a symbol of justice, democracy, and the rule of law on our continent.
This anniversary is of particular significance for Ukraine. In just a few days, we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s membership in the Council of Europe, a community of democratic states that stand guard over human rights.
Since the very beginning of our membership, we have developed close cooperation with the European Court of Human Rights, primarily at the governmental level through constant dialogue between the Court and Ukrainian state institutions that ensure the implementation of its decisions, the harmonization of legislation, and the incorporation of the Convention’s standards into the national legal system. Ukraine remains an active and responsible participant in this system even in times of war.
That is why it is extremely symbolic that today, on the 75th anniversary of the Convention, Ukrainian Minister of Justice German Galushchenko is visiting Strasbourg and meeting with the President of the European Court of Human Rights, M. Guillemard.
During the meeting, emphasis was placed on Ukraine’s resilience, its sovereign right to make decisions even in the most difficult times, and the government’s consistency in fulfilling its international obligations and the Court’s decisions.
The President of the ECHR confirmed his unwavering support for Ukraine, while the Ukrainian side reported on large-scale and systematic human rights violations committed by the aggressor state, including the bombing of civilian infrastructure, strikes on Zaporizhzhia, and attacks on penitentiary institutions. These crimes cannot be ignored, and Ukraine is working consistently to ensure that each of them receives the appropriate legal assessment and punishment.
