Mass Killings in Sudan: Bodies Visible from Space
Satellite images show mass killings in Sudan, according to researchers at Yale University.
Since April 2023, fighting has continued in the country between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). After an 18-month siege, the RSF captured the city of El Fasher. Since then, there have been reports of extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, attacks on humanitarian workers, looting and kidnappings.
The Yale Human Rights Law Lab (Yale HRL) said that recent satellite imagery showed ‘no large-scale movements’. This suggests that most of the population may be ‘dead, captured or in hiding’.
Yale HRL identified at least 31 clusters of objects resembling human bodies between 27 and 31 October in various areas, on university campuses and at military facilities.Earlier, Yale HRL stated that there were ‘signs of close-range combat’ in El Fasher and that this activity ‘may correspond to reports that the RSF has captured people in and around the [military] airfield’.
